Introduction to Global Electric Motorcars

 Global Electric Motorcars, or GEM for short, is a company that has really pioneered the way when it comes to neighborhood electric vehicles.  Abbreviated NEV for short, these types of vehicles are essentially low-powered fully electric vehicles that are responsible for carrying some people through their neighborhoods.  It is actually a legal class of vehicle in the United States, able to be operated on smaller side roads that have lower speed limits.  No major roads will allow NEVs, but people that only need to get around their local neighborhood can get very cheap and zero emission mileage out of the use of a GEM-NEV.

 GEM at the moment holds its headquarters in the city of Fargo in the state of North Dakota within the United States, but it is owned by the Chrysler Corporation.  Chrysler is of course based in Detroit, Michigan along with the other two of the big three North American automobile manufacturers for that reason you should not be surprised if you wake up one day to find that GEM has been relocated to that area as well. Finally, one last thing that is worth mentioning about GEM is that it is going to be going through a rebranding process in the not too distant future.  Global Electric Motorcars will become Green Eco-Mobility.  So while the GEM acronym will stay exactly the same in the case of this company, it is going to shortly be standing for something else.

 Electric Vehicles in GEM

 In a way, it is impossible to discuss anything but electric vehicles in the context of GEM because that is all that they make.  That fact is right there in their current name, although the fact that they exclusively manufacture NEVs is certainly not.

 In any case, the company was founded in 1992 under the name Trans2, but did not do very well under its original owners.  It was only when the current North Dakota management team took over in 1997 that the company began to do things, starting with the manufacture of its initial NEV product.  This car was able to attain a maximum cruising speed of 20 mph and once it was put onto the market, GEM attracted the attention of Chrysler.  The latter bought out the former in 2000 and has owned it to the present day.

 The present day is looking nothing but bright for GEM.  They have shipped over 35,000 different cars over the course of their brief history and now have six different vehicles that are regularly on sale.  There are many organizations that have purchased these cars including the military, the medical industry, golf courses, airports and neighbourhoods that house a lot of senior citizens.  In just about every single state they have been able to get their cars legal on all streets with speed limits of 35 mph or less, meaning that even on streets with limits that cannot be reached by their vehicles, you could still potentially get away with driving one.

 GEM Products

 There are many products manufactured by GEM.  At the current moment, they have six active car models with a seventh that is expected to hit the marketplace at some point in the 2010 calendar year.

 At the current moment in time, their bread and butter product is probably the GEM e2.  This handy little product is a vehicle that seats two people and essentially operates under the same electricity-powered NEV status that GEM has become famous for.  This is the ideal for quick and easy transportation over small distances.

 For someone that is interested in the idea of the e2, but would like a little more space inside the actual vehicle, GEM does have other products that could possibly be of interest.  The first of those is the GEM e4.  The e4 is essentially the exact same car as the e2 with the exception of having an additional row of seating.  This means that you can fit four into the car as opposed to the two that were originally available within the e2 model.

 Finally, the GEM e6 would be considered top of the line as far as these particular vehicles are concerned.  The GEM e6 has the same power specifications in terms of range and top cruising speed as the other two cars, but the exception is that it has a third row of seating for a total of up to six seats available.

 Cars are not the only things manufactured by GEM right now.  They also manufacture pickup truck NEVs.  These are easily some of the most interesting vehicles around from the point of view of how they look, but they also have some very impressive statistics that might surprise you quite a bit.

 The low-end version of their pickup truck is the GEM eS.  This particular product has two seats and a flat bed that measures 39 inches wide and 48 inches long.  Overall, it can haul 330 pounds of cargo, something that just a few years ago people were claiming was impossible to do with an electrically powered vehicle.

 For people that need a bit more power than that, an upgrade to the GEM eL might very well be in store.  This has the same seating availability as the eS, but has a longer flat bed measuring in at 70 inches wide and 48 inches long.  This extra flat bed area allows a person to haul up to 700 pounds of cargo with this particular vehicle.

 Still not satisfied?  Well, GEM has one more vehicle that might impress you.  It is the GEM eL XD, the top of the line as far as their electric pickup truck NEVs are concerned.  It has the same extended flat bed as the eL, but has been reinforced and overpowered to get its overall hauling capacity up to 1100 pounds.  For an electric vehicle, that is certainly special.

 In addition to these six vehicles that are already available, GEM has a 7^th in the works.  It is the GEM Peapod, a four-seat electric car that will go very well with anyone that already owns an iPod.  Look for it in stores starting sometime in the 2010 year, although be prepared to wait as there is already a long waiting list for purchasing this car.
